ICCAT meeting ends in dramatic defeat of proposal to end at-sea fin removal while other shark safeguards advance

Limassol, Cyprus. November 18, 2024. This year’s meeting of the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) has ended with a dramatic showdown over shark finning with Belize calling for a rare vote, only to be thwarted by Japan and China. ICCAT did manage to finalize protections for devil rays, mantas, and whale sharks, and took steps to improve countries’ compliance with existing requirements to report and limit shark catch.

Fishing and Trade of Shortfin Mako Sharks Banned in Country Ranked Second for Regional Landings

The government of Morocco has announced a national prohibition on the fishing, storage, and trade of shortfin mako sharks (Isurus oxyrinchus), in line with a broader measure agreed in November 2021 through the International Commission for Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT). Although the hard-won ICCAT ban could be weakened after two years (due to EU insistence), Morocco’s ban is set to remain in place for five.

Celebran la prohibición de las 90 toneladas que los palangreros de superficie capturaron el año pasado.

La organización conservacionista Shark League está convencida de que la decisión que ha tomado el Ministerio de Transición Ecológica español de imponer un cupo cero para la venta de marrajo tendrá consecuencias positivas en la reducción de la sobrepesca de la especie en el Atlántico norte. Y es que, según sostiene la Shark League en un comunicado, España ocupa la primera posición mundial en capturas de marrajo dientuso y es responsable de alrededor de la mitad de los desembarques de ejemplares de la población de ese océano, especialmente diezmada.
